Dr. Jahangir Alam is a renowned agricultural economist with specialization in agricultural and rural development, development economics, agribusiness, agricultural policy, trade liberalization and comparative advantage in agriculture, non-government organizations in rural development, income distribution and poverty. He has 45 years experience in research and teaching. He has published 165 books and research papers on agricultural and rural development. Besides, he has 272 popular articles to his credit. Very recently, he has completed his term as Vice-Chancellor, University of Global Village (UGV), Barisal. Currently, he has been working as Director, Dhaka School of Economics (A constituent institution of the University of Dhaka). He is a columnist.
Dr. Jahangir Alam was born in Brahmanbaria district on 31 December 1952. He obtained B.Sc. Ag.Econ. (Hons.) in 1972 and M.Sc. in Agricultural Economics in 1973 from the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh; Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand in 1983; and completed Post-Doctoral studies in Development Economics from Lincoln University, New Zealand in 1998. He worked as the Director General of the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute, Savar, Dhaka from 2006 to 2009 and Member Director (Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology) of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council from 2001 to 2006. He worked as an Adjunct Faculty (Professor) at Sher-e- Bangle Agricultural University, Dhaka in the Faculty of Agribusiness Management from 2012 to 2017 and offered theoretical classes for MS students on Research Methodology, Agribusiness, Agricultural Policy, Economics of Agricultural Development, and Rural Development. He was a Professor of Economics at the Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Global Village, Barisal and subsequently was appointed as Vice-chancellor of the University in 2017. He worked as a member of Syndicate, Senate, and Academic Council of different Universities and is still engaged in supervising and examining MS and PhD dissertations.
Dr. Alam is the former President of Bangladesh Agricultural Economists’ Association. He received several awards including the Ekushe Padak-2020, Presidential Award for Agricultural Development in 1980, Dr. S.D Choudhuri Gold Medal given by the Bangladesh Academy of Agriculture in 2004 and Bangladesh Agricultural Economists’ Association Gold Medal in 2022 for his outstanding contributions to research in Agricultural and Rural Economics. He is a life member of Bangladesh Economic Association, Krishibid Institution, Bangla Academy and Asiatic Society. He was a renowned debater during his student life and achieved championship in the university and interuniversity debate competitions several times. He was given the Vice-Chancellor’s Gold Medal in 1974 for his outstanding literary activities at Bangladesh Agricultural University. He was a heroic freedom fighter in 1971.
